Youâll start in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. The first third of the journey leads you along the fabled G318, Chinaâs longest national road, to Lhasa, right in the midst of the mountainous and lush splendour of Tibetâs highlands. From Lhasa, youâll take a side-trip â a side-trip if ever there was one â to the Chinese base camp of Mount Everest.</p> <p>During the second third, the journey leads you first back east for a while, then north into Qinghai province, one of Chinaâs most isolated and sparsely populated province. On the way to Qinghaiâs capital, Xining, you cross the upper reaches of both the Yangtze as well as the Yellow River, those two waters that have shaped Chinaâs civilisation more than anything else.
