Love CV

[Red Magazine, being the hard-core male mag that it is, wanted me to say a few words about luuuuuuv. Here is what popped into my head.]

Most Romantic Book? – Love in the Times of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.   Waiting for your woman for fifty-three years, seven months, and eleven days and nights.  That eternity almost broke my heart just reading about it.

Dating rules? -  If you want rules, go to Switzerland.

Most romantic gesture? – I had just come home from two months on the road.   My wife and I were sitting in our balcony, eating dinner by candle light and looking up onto Victoria Peak.  The moment felt right, and so I dared, just, to broach the topic: “I am thinking about going on a 3-month driving journey in China.  What do you think?”  I feared the worst, but she shrugged, and replied, “Darling, I decided long ago that life with you is an adventure.”

Worst heart break – When the love of my life emphatically told me “We can never be more than just friends.”  Two years later we got married.

Are you in love right now? – Yes, with my wife and with life.  Favorite quote:  “Life … to skid in broadside and arrive at your grave thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, ‘Wow, what a ride!’” (anonymous)

Is love or lust the most powerful feeling? – Lust is like speed:  it gets you there faster.  Love is about the journey.

Is infidelity ever acceptable?  Infidelity breaks a heart and puts it to shame.   If you must, break a heart, but don’t also put it shame.

Longest period of celibacy?  The fifteen years or so until I discovered sex.
